Who are we?

Firey Lou is a passionate, community-led organisation and registered charity dedicated to preventing gender-based violence and promoting safe, inclusive spaces for all. We bring together a collective of prevention practitioners, support workers, psychologists, and community members who are united by a shared commitment to justice and lasting change.

Rooted in intersectional feminism, we believe in the power of connection, education, and collective action. Firey Lou works alongside local communities to raise awareness, support survivors, and challenge the social norms that allow violence to persist. Together, we’re building a future where everyone can live free from fear and harm and where change is driven by those closest to the work.

What do we do?

At Firey Lou, we lead community-driven initiatives that focus on preventing gender-based violence through education, advocacy, and support. We organise events, workshops, and campaigns that raise awareness and foster conversations about respect, consent, and equality. By collaborating with local groups, survivors, and experts, we create safe spaces for healing and learning. We also work to influence policy and encourage systemic change to address the root causes of violence. Our goal is to empower individuals and communities to stand together against violence and build a culture of care and accountability.

How did we start?

Firey Lou started with our founder, Shantelle, whose story is deeply rooted in lived experience. She grew up in a strict religious cult where women were silenced, taught not to question anything, and discouraged from using their voices. Shantelle left at 17 and spent years working through the trauma of that upbringing. Later, working professionally in the gender-based violence sector, she found new inspiration when her daughter, Louka or ‘Lou’, was born. Louka’s boldness, strong sense of justice, and confidence in using her voice inspired Shantelle, teaching her how to use her own voice and step fully into her power to speak out, create change, and make space for others to do the same. She started an Instagram page called Firey Lou to use as an outlet and share educational content which has grown into what it is today.
